Blockbuster move: Paris Lights sign ex-New England Patriots defensive lineman Wilfried Pene
The Paris Lights have made one of the most exciting signings of the AFLE offseason, bringing in French homegrown defensive lineman Wilfried Pene. The 25-year-old from Tours brings NFL experience and a hunger to prove himself to the Paris defensive front.
From France to the NFL
Pene started playing football at the age of 14 in France, initially as a receiver before his size and athleticism led him towards the defensive line. His talent earned him a scholarship to Virginia Tech, where he became a cornerstone of the Hokies‘ defensive line over four seasons, registering 73 tackles, nine tackles for loss and five sacks in 34 career games. His performances were enough to attract NFL interest, and in 2025 he joined the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent before being released due to a visa issue, a frustrating setback for a player on the rise.
A chip on his shoulder
Pene has made no secret of his motivation heading into the 2026 season. Speaking to The Canadian Press earlier this year, he said: „Getting cut because of a piece of paper makes me hungrier because I know I can play football. I just want to let go of all that frustration and put everything on the field and just play.“
That mentality is exactly what the Paris Lights are getting in Pene, a talented, physical and motivated defensive lineman ready to make his mark in the AFLE.
