Former CFL Defensive Back Justin Howell – Will he bring fire to the Rhein?

Justin Howell arrives in Germany with serious professional experience and unfinished business. After years in the Canadian Football League, the veteran defensive back now joins Rhein Fire, giving one of Europe’s top American Football teams depth, leadership, and versatility in their secondary.

Justin Howell’s CFL career built on consistency and toughness

Before making the move to the AFLE, Howell built a respected career with the Ottawa Redblacks in the CFL. Drafted in the seventh round in 2018, the Canadian defensive back developed into a reliable contributor over multiple seasons. Across 79 CFL games, Howell recorded 115 defensive tackles, 31 special teams tackles, five forced fumbles and a sack. His best statistical season came in 2023, when he posted a career-high 39 tackles in 13 games.

That résumé matters because it shows durability, professionalism, and the ability to perform in multiple roles. Howell played safety, contributed on coverage units, and earned trust from coaching staffs over several years.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned is consistency,” Howell said. “Talent can get you there, but it’s your habits, preparation, and mindset that keep you there.”

Why Rhein Fire was the right move for Howell

Howell had options, but Rhein Fire stood out immediately. The reigning European powerhouse has built a strong brand through winning football, elite fan support, and high standards across the organization.

“For me, it came down to timing and opportunity,” Howell explained. “I’ve had a great run in the CFL, but I still feel like I’m playing some of my best football.”

He added, “they’re a top organization with a winning culture, strong fan base, and high standards. I didn’t want just any opportunity, I wanted the right one. Rhein Fire checked every box.”

That statement will excite Fire fans. It suggests Howell did not come to Europe for a final stop, he came to compete for a championship and bring some fire to the Rhein area.

What Justin Howell brings to the Rhein Fire defense

Howell describes himself in direct football terms: “physical, versatile, and disciplined.”

Those traits fit perfectly into Rhein Fire’s defensive identity. He can help in man coverage, support the run from the secondary, and play key snaps on special teams. Veteran defensive backs who tackle well and communicate clearly are often difference-makers in European football, especially in big playoff games.

“I take pride in being a tone-setter and getting to the football,” Howell said. “Whether that’s in coverage, in the run game, or on special teams.”

For Rhein Fire, that means adding a player who can impact multiple phases of the game without needing the spotlight.

Championship goals in the AFLE

Howell’s personal goals are clear and ambitious. “First and foremost, I want to help the team win, that’s always the priority. I want to win a championship and be a dominant player in the league.”

That mindset is exactly why Rhein Fire targeted him. The club is not rebuilding, it is chasing more titles in a newly structured league. Howell’s CFL experience, competitive edge, and team-first mentality could make him one of the smartest additions in the AFLE this season. For fans in Düsseldorf and across Europe, Justin Howell is more than a new signing. He is a veteran playmaker arriving with purpose.
