From 14 Years as a Player to Leading the Vikings Defense
Daniel Auböck has spent more of his life inside the Vienna Vikings organization than outside of it. As a player for 14 years, a youth coach for nearly a decade and now defensive coordinator of one of Europe’s most ambitious professional franchises, Auböck’s story is one of total dedication to a single club and a single vision.
A journey built from the ground up
Auböck did not arrive at the top of European football through a shortcut. Every step of his journey has been earned within the Vikings system, from his playing days through the youth ranks and up through the men’s divisions until reaching the professional level. That path has given him a perspective on the game and the organization that very few coaches anywhere in Europe can match. „All these stages are a part of me and helped to make me who I am today,“ he said.
Breaking new ground for European coaches
Auböck’s appointment as defensive coordinator is not just a personal milestone but a significant moment for European football coaching more broadly. Leading an all-homegrown defensive coaching staff on the biggest stage European football has to offer, he is acutely aware of what his role represents. He is proud to fly the flag for Austrian and European coaches at a time when homegrown coaching talent rarely gets the opportunity to shine at this level.
A philosophy built on trust and physicality
On the field, Auböck’s defensive identity is built on three pillars: sound scheme and technique, relentless pursuit of the ball and being the most physical unit on the field. But beyond the Xs and Os, what drives his approach is a deep belief in trust. He wants every player on his defense to execute their assignment with full confidence that the man next to them is doing the same. That collective accountability, built over years of working together, is what he believes has been at the heart of the Vikings‘ defensive success.
The Vikings DNA
For Auböck, the concept of Vikings DNA is not a marketing phrase. It is something he has lived and breathed for the better part of his adult life. A culture of hard work, commitment to excellence and a refusal to be satisfied with the status quo runs through everything the organization does, and Auböck sees himself as both a product and a custodian of that culture.
A warning for the rest of the AFLE
As the Vikings prepare for their first AFLE season, Auböck is under no illusions about the challenge ahead. His defense will not be perfect. But what every opponent on the 2026 schedule can expect is a unit that plays with maximum intensity from the first snap to the last. „Fans, teammates and especially opponents can expect this unit to be the fastest and most punishing in all of Europe. The intensity with which this unit plays will be seen, heard and felt.“
The rest of the AFLE has been warned.
