Kevin Kaya earns Homegrown of the Year in a season that demanded everything from him
Kevin Kaya came to the Alpine Rams with a resume that included college football in Canada and time in the CFL. In the inaugural AFLE season, he proved he belongs among the best receivers in European football, joining Jon Cole and Mike Harley Jr. as one of only three receivers to crack 1,000 receiving yards in the inaugural AFLE season, and taking home the Homegrown of the Year award.
A road that led back to Europe
Kaya’s path to the AFLE was shaped by experience. College football in Canada gave him his foundation, and a stint in the CFL showed he could perform at a high level in North American football. When he returned to Europe, he brought all of that with him, and the Alpine Rams were the beneficiaries. His presence gave their offense a genuine weapon and a player who had been tested before the season even started.
Three quarterbacks, one consistent performer
If there is one thing that makes Kaya’s season stand out beyond the numbers, it is the circumstances he performed in. The Rams began the season with Gabriel Cunningham under center, switched to Seth Morgan from the second game onward, and handed the reins to Hank Bachmeier for the final three weeks. Three different quarterbacks, three different reads, three different relationships to build. Kaya adapted to all of them and kept producing regardless of who was throwing him the ball.
Growing into the season
He started fast, posting 191 receiving yards and a touchdown across the first two games. Things quieted down for a spell after that, but Kaya’s value to the offense only grew as the season went on. His chemistry with each quarterback deepened, his route running became more reliable and opponents found it increasingly difficult to take him out of the game plan.
The week 12 explosion
One of the league’s most extraordinary games produced Kaya’s defining moment of the season. Against Firenze Red Lions in week 12, Kaya put up 206 receiving yards and four touchdowns as part of one of the greatest offensive performances in AFLE history. Paired with Bachmeier in full flow, he was virtually untouchable and played a central role in the Rams‘ 45-42 victory in a shootout that combined over 1,200 total yards.
A place in the record books
By the end of the season, Kaya had surpassed the 1,000-yard mark, joining Jon Cole and Mike Harley Jr. as the only three receivers to reach that milestone in the inaugural AFLE campaign. It is exclusive company, and Kaya earned his place in it the hard way. The Homegrown of the Year award was a fitting recognition of a season that demanded consistency, adaptability and quality in equal measure. He delivered all three.
