Red Lions HC Bill Shuey: “We’re building a team the city can be proud of”
The Firenze Red Lions are entering the AFLE with ambition, identity, and a head coach who understands what professional football culture looks like at the highest level. With longtime NFL assistant coach Bill Shuey leading the project, the Italian franchise is betting on structure, discipline, and long-term development rather than short-term hype.
Bill Shuey’s NFL experience brings credibility
Before arriving in Florence, Bill Shuey spent decades coaching in American football, including extensive experience in the NFL and college football. His résumé includes work with organizations such as the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he developed a reputation as a detail-oriented defensive coach.
That background is now shaping the Red Lions from day one. “My NFL experience has taught me the importance of structure, attention to detail, and consistency,” Shuey explained. “I will bring those standards while adapting to develop players who may still be learning the game at a high level.”
For a first-year AFLE organization, that balance between elite expectations and player development could become a major advantage.
Building the Firenze Red Lions from the ground up
Unlike coaches stepping into established systems, Shuey is creating an entire football culture from scratch. That challenge is exactly what attracted him to the role.
“I’m motivated by building something from the ground up; creating a culture, developing players, and helping grow the game internationally,” he said. “The chance to lead a first-year team in a historic city like Florence is a unique and meaningful challenge.”
The Red Lions are not simply trying to assemble talent; they are trying to establish an identity. According to Shuey, the foundation starts with accountability inside the locker room.
“When building a team, we are looking to establish trust, accountability, discipline, and a team-first mentality,” he said. “From day one, every player needs to understand that effort, preparation, and respect for the team come before individual success.”
That philosophy mirrors the approach used in successful professional programs, where consistency often matters more than star power.
Defensive Leadership and Head Coach Responsibilities
Shuey will serve not only as head coach, but also as defensive coordinator — a demanding dual role in any league. His solution centers around delegation and communication.
“Building a strong staff and delegating responsibilities clearly is the foundation for balancing both roles as HC and DC,” he explained. “The program operates with a shared vision, trusted assistants leading in their areas, and dedicated time focused on installing and refining the defense.”
He also emphasized how years of coaching shaped his leadership style. “Working with great coaches throughout my career taught me the value of communication, organization, and adaptability,” Shuey said. “Teaching and helping people become the best they can be is something I genuinely enjoy.”
Firenze’s football identity begins now
The Red Lions know success will not happen overnight, but the organization wants to create a connection with the city from the beginning.
“We’re building a team the city can be proud of; tough, disciplined, and relentless,” Shuey said. “We hope that the community will bring energy and support as we lay the foundation for something special in Florence.”
For AFLE fans, Bill Shuey represents more than an experienced coach. He represents a serious attempt to bring NFL-level professionalism and culture to one of Europe’s most ambitious new football projects.
