Rhein Fire aim to return to championship form in the 2026 American Football League Europe season

Rhein Fire are one of the most recognizable franchises in European American football. The team from western Germany returned to the football stage in 2021 and quickly rebuilt a strong identity around passionate fans and a competitive team culture.

While the current franchise is not officially connected to the historic NFL Europe team of the same name, Rhein Fire kept the iconic name and successfully reconnected with many supporters of the former franchise. With former NFL head coach Jim Tomsula as an early cornerstone of the organization, the team built a strong foundation that quickly led to success.

From 2022 to 2025, Rhein Fire competed in the European League of Football and became one of the league’s most dominant teams. The franchise reached the playoffs three times and won the championship in both 2023 and 2024. In 2025, the team again reached the postseason but was eliminated in the Wildcard Round. For a team with such high ambitions, that result was not enough.

Now Rhein Fire enter the 2026 season of the American Football League Europe with one clear goal: returning to the top.

Team overview

In just a few years, Rhein Fire have already established themselves as one of the most successful teams in European football. Three playoff appearances and two championships underline how strong the organization has been since its return.

After a slightly less dominant but still successful 2025 season, expectations for 2026 are high. Both the franchise and its passionate fan base, known as the Fire Family, expect the team to compete for another championship.

Players to watch

Kenji Bahar – Quarterback

Kenji Bahar will lead the Rhein Fire offense as the team’s starting quarterback in 2026. For Bahar, the upcoming season marks his first experience playing football in Europe.

The American quarterback brings a strong football background. He played college football at Monmouth University at the NCAA Division I FCS level, where he started multiple seasons and gained valuable experience.

After college, Bahar spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and later played in several professional leagues in North America. Known for his passing ability and leadership on the field, Bahar will be responsible for directing the Rhein Fire offense and creating opportunities for his receivers.

Harlan Kwofie – Wide receiver

Harlan Kwofie is widely considered one of the best and most talented wide receivers in European football. The 26-year-old German has become a true homegrown hero and a key figure in the Rhein Fire organization.

Kwofie has been part of the team for four seasons and has delivered strong performances year after year. With his excellent route running, speed, and reliable hands, he remains one of the most important targets in the Fire passing game.

His connection with quarterback Kenji Bahar will be crucial for the success of the Rhein Fire offense in 2026.

Christian Matthew – Defensive back

Stepping in for the injured Cam’ron Kelly, Rhein Fire have wasted no time in finding a high-quality replacement. The Fire have signed American cornerback Christian Matthew, a player with genuine NFL pedigree, to strengthen their defensive backfield ahead of the 2026 season.

Matthew was selected with the 244th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, where he also saw time on the active roster during his rookie year. Over the following three years he was part of several NFL organisations including the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears, gaining valuable experience across their practice squads. Most recently he played for the Orlando Storm in the UFL, keeping his game sharp at a high professional level.

Now joining Rhein Fire, Matthew steps into a talented secondary alongside players like Nazir Streater and is expected to bring both depth and playmaking ability to the pass defense. With his NFL background and continued professional development, he is a player well worth watching as the Fire look to build a dominant defensive unit in 2026.
