Rhein Fire at Vienna Vikings: One Game That Could Define a Season

This weekend, the Generali Arena in Vienna hosts a clash between the Vienna Vikings and Rhein Fire. Old rivals, yes, but above all two genuine title contenders ready to make their statement early in the season.

Three meetings, two Rhein Fire wins, and the Vienna Vikings haven’t forgotten. Now, for the first time under the banner of the American Football League Europe, these two heavyweights get to settle the score. The history is there, the rivalry is real, and this time the Vikings are determined to flip the script – in front of a crowd that can reach up to 17,500 in a stadium they specifically chose for this fixture.

Adding another layer to an already loaded matchup: three Vienna Vikings players know exactly what it feels like to wear a Rhein Fire jersey. Defensive back Marloshawn Franklin Jr., pass rusher Alejandro Fernandez, and offensive lineman Nick Wiens all suit up against their former team for the first time, bringing personal storylines and an extra edge of motivation to bring the win home to Vienna.

Rhein Fire’s Message: We’ve Done Our Homework

The tension has been building since the first whistle of the new training week, and linebacker Marius Kensy confirmed it. Asked whether the squad could already feel a difference in practice with such a big game on the horizon, he didn’t hesitate: „Absolutely. The energy in practice has been different since Tuesday. Everyone is a little sharper, a little more locked in.“

On the other side, Rhein Fire aren’t short on belief either. Asked whether there was anything on film that gave him confidence his side could slow down a dominant Vikings offense, the answer was clear: „They’re good, no doubt. But we’ve done our homework and we know what to do. I’m confident in this team and confident in our preparation.“

Rhein Fire know exactly who they’re up against under center. Vienna Vikings quarterback Ben Holmes is no stranger to them, and yet stopping him is easier said than done. Through the first two weeks of the season, Holmes has been in outstanding form, throwing for 505 passing yards and five touchdowns. A familiar face, but a problem that doesn’t get any easier with familiarity. Yet Marius Kensy showed no signs of concern when asked about Holmes in an interview: „He’s a good quarterback, no doubt. But my job is simple: make his life as difficult as possible and not give him a second to breathe.“

The man tasked with keeping Fire’s offense moving the chains is Kenji Bahar, a quarterback whose résumé speaks for itself: college standout at Monmouth, USFL experience with the Houston Gamblers, and multiple looks from the Baltimore Ravens. Saturday’s road game will be his biggest test yet in a Rhein Fire uniform.

Vienna Vikings Strive for More Explosive Plays

The Vikings don’t come unprepared as well. On the ground, the Vikings come loaded. Running backs Karri Pajarinen and Albert Wiesigstrauch form one of the most dangerous backfield duos in the league – combining for 324 rushing yards through two games, with Wiesigstrauch leading the way at 204 and Pajarinen adding 120. Through the air, Yannick Mayr burned defenders for a 44-yard and a 54-yard touchdown in Week 2, his connection with Holmes growing sharper by the week. Noah Touré remains one of the safest targets in the league, and Darrell Stewart Jr. brings top-end experience at receiver.

After last season’s home defeat against Rhein Fire, Vienna want nothing more than to turn the tables on Saturday. But head coach Chris Calaycay knows it won’t come easy: „Both teams have good defenses. We can’t make mistakes. We have two experienced teams here. It’s gonna be a battle and it’s gonna be tough.“

That hunger runs through the entire locker room. When asked about protecting quarterback Ben Holmes, offensive lineman Nick Wiens, himself a former Rhein Fire player, kept it simple: „I’d do anything for Ben.“

Unfinished Business

When these two teams met last season, they split the series. Fire went to Vienna and won, Vienna came to Duisburg and won. That means the Vikings arrive at the Generali Arena with something to prove. After last season’s home defeat against Rhein Fire, they want to make it clear that no team comes into their stadium and leaves with a win.

Fire know exactly what that record means too, and they intend to stay unbeaten.

One thing is certain: early as it is in the season, teams and fans alike are in for one of the most emotional and intense matchups of the entire regular season. By the time the final whistle blows on Week 3, the picture will be a lot clearer. Head coach Chris Calaycay put it best: „After week 3, we’ll get a pretty good overview of what the league really looks like.“

Both quarterbacks are sharp. Both rosters are loaded. Whoever wins the chess match between Holmes and Bahar will likely win the game, and take a decisive step toward defining what this season is all about.
