The First Spark: How Hillock and Wallace Ignited the Paris Lights

The Paris Lights have opened their AFLE era with a historic 30-8 win over the Firenze Red Lions. One duo stood out in particular during this game. Quarterback Evan Hillock and wide receiver Tristen Wallace showed exactly what is possible in Paris.

A Bold Bet on a New Concept

The start of the first game of the Paris Lights was a little rocky. They didn’t put their first points on the board until midway through the second quarter. But from that moment on, they never let go of the game.

As soon as Paris found their rhythm, so did the duo of the day. Hillock and Wallace clicked into gear, and the Lights made it clear that bringing in a Canadian quarterback and American wide receivers was exactly the right call. The decision to pair Evan Hillock with Tristen Wallace was never an obvious one. The AFLE introduced a new designation for Canadian players, allowing them to serve as international imports rather than being classified as Americans. Paris was one of the franchises to embrace this concept, and they went all in. They didn’t just sign a Canadian quarterback. They built an offense around him, adding two American wide receivers to give Hillock the weapons he needed to thrive.

Head Coach David Shelton had already been confident before kickoff. „I played in Canada, so I knew about him, he is one of the top-guys in Canada“ he said in a pre-game interview. That familiarity showed. Hillock knows how to read a defense, how to go through his progressions, and most importantly, how to find his playmaker when it matters. His quarterback completed 18 of 27 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns went to Wallace.

The Connection That Changed the Game

Wallace brought exactly what Paris needed on the other end of that connection. He is a receiver who can win at every level of the field. And against Firenze, he did exactly that.

Wallace finished with 4 receptions on 5 targets for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging 29 yards per catch. The moment that unlocked the whole game was a 59-yard deep shot from Hillock that Wallace hauled in, setting the comeback in motion. „We came out a little bit flat,“ Hillock said after the game. „(…) But we had that deep shot on Tristen.“ One throw. One receiver. The Lights never looked back.

What makes this connection work, though, goes beyond talent. Hillock was quick to credit the foundation that allows both of them to operate. „The whole offensive line did very well. I mean, I only took one hit. Shoutout to those guys, they did a great job,“ he said right after the final whistle. A clean pocket gave the Canadian quarterback the time to find his American target, spreading the ball to six different receivers and keeping the Firenze defense guessing all afternoon.

Wallace had the final word. When asked who the game changer of the day was, he didn’t hesitate: „Always Evan. Evan Hillock, our quarterback. He does so much for us. On the field, off the field. Communication skills, getting us lined in.“

A Canadian quarterback. An American wide receiver. A new franchise in Paris. The first spark has been struck. It brought not only the first win in franchise history, but also a connection that all of European American football will have its eyes on for the rest of the 2026 season.
