The German derby delivered everything fans could have asked for
If anyone needed a reminder of why the AFLE is worth watching, Berlin Thunder at Rhein Fire on Sunday was the answer. Over 1000 combined total yards, two quarterbacks playing at a high level, receivers making big play after big play and a finish that went to the very last minutes. This was football at its entertaining best.
A game that refused to be decided early
From the opening drive to the final whistle, neither team was willing to blink. Rhein Fire were the favourites going in, but Berlin came with a completely different look to their offense, balanced through the air and on the ground, and made sure this was never going to be a comfortable afternoon for the hosts. The Thunder matched Rhein Fire at almost every turn and kept the game genuinely tight from start to finish. In a league still in its first season, this was the kind of game that makes new fans.
Geiger, Kwofie and Sullivan put on a show
The individual performances on display were something to watch. Kaylon Geiger and Harlan Kwofie both topped 125 receiving yards for Rhein Fire, two receivers consistently finding ways to get open and make plays when their team needed them most. On the other sideline, Jakeb Sullivan was outstanding. He led the Thunder with real authority, kept his team in a game they were not supposed to be in and showed the kind of composure under pressure that has made him the league leader in passing yards and touchdowns. One interception aside, his performance was one of the best of the young AFLE season.
Fine margins in a game of over 1000 yards
When two offenses are combining for over 1000 total yards, you know you are watching something special. Neither defense could slow the other down for long, and every time it looked like one team might pull away, the other found an answer. Seven penalties from the Thunder and a Fire pass rush that came alive in the moments that mattered most were ultimately the difference, along with Jonathan Scott finding the end zone on the ground with two minutes remaining to put the game beyond reach.
The final score was 45-36 to Rhein Fire, but nobody in the stands or watching at home was thinking about the numbers. They were thinking about the catches, the runs, the quarterback duels and a finish that kept everyone on the edge of their seat until Jonathan Scott crossed the goal line with two minutes to go. That is what a derby should look like.
