The Hardest Part of Building Something Great? The Beginning!
The Firenze Red Lions are 0-3. But this record doesn’t tell you what’s happening inside their locker room. It doesn’t tell you about the effort, the growth, or the belief that something special is being built in Florence.
Experience On the Sidelines, Talent On the Field
The Firenze Red Lions made one thing clear when assembling their staff: experience matters. With Head Coach Bill Shuey bringing over 25 years of coaching experience to the sideline, this young roster has exactly the guidance it needs to develop. The record may read 0-3, but the growth happening inside this team tells a different story, one that is still being written, rep by rep, game by game.
Yet while the results have been sobering, the offensive talent on this roster is hard to ignore. Week 4 offered a glimpse of what this offense is capable of. Quarterback Matthew McKay threw for 252 yards, enough to rank third among all AFLE passers that week, and added three touchdown passes, placing him fourth in the league’s weekly passing touchdown leaders. Wide receiver Keith Emmanuel Coffee II was his most dangerous weapon, hauling in 127 receiving yards to lead the entire league in that category for the week. And it’s not just the imported talent making noise: homegrown Lorenzo Cinelli, just 20 years old, has been one of the most exciting players on the roster. In Week 3, the young Italian was McKay’s go-to option, hauling in 7 receptions for 140 receiving yards and creating big plays that turned heads across the league. A player with that kind of ability at that age is one to watch, not just for the Red Lions, but for European football as a whole. Add Brandon Belgrave to the week’s rushing touchdown leaders, and it becomes clear: this offense has weapons. It just needs time to grow together.
The Red Lions Don’t Go Down Without a Fight
A look at the numbers reveals where the real struggle lies. Through three games, the Firenze Red Lions have conceded 126 points on defense, compared to just 46 scored by the offense. It is a sobering figure, and one that Head Coach Shuey and his staff will be working hard to address during the bye week. Yet even on that side of the ball, there are reasons for optimism. Defensive standout Quelly-Johnson Sousa has been a disruptive force, leading the AFLE’s Week 4 sack leaderboard with 2.0 sacks and sitting third in the season-to-date rankings. The talent is there. The system is being installed. And with Shuey’s defensive pedigree leading the way, the Red Lions‘ defense has every reason to believe better days are ahead. Alongside him, Yago Sanchez Moreno has made his presence felt with 11 tackles, appearing in both the tackles and pass defensed leaderboards. The results speak against the team. The talent speaks for it.
What’s Next
The timing couldn’t be better. The Firenze Red Lions now head into a bye week, a chance to step back, reset, and make the adjustments that can turn a season around. The losses are noted, the lessons are learned. When Week 6 arrives, the 3-1 Wroclaw Panthers will come to Florence, and the Red Lions will be ready to show what this team is truly capable of.
