“This is a marathon, not a sprint” Bart Iaccarino building the Firenze Red Lions step by step

With the launch of the Firenze Red Lions, a new chapter begins for American football in Italy. Leading this ambitious project is General Manager Bart Iaccarino, who has been given the responsibility of building the franchise from the ground up in the American Football League Europe.

For Iaccarino, this role is more than just a professional position. It is a personal mission.

“First of all, I want to thank the board members of the American Football League Europe for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to build this new project in my home country.”

Being able to create something new in Italy gives the project special meaning. At the same time, Iaccarino knows that excitement alone is not enough. Structure, planning, and patience will be key in the first months of the organization.

Laying the foundation for the future

Instead of focusing only on short-term results, Iaccarino speaks clearly about sustainability. For him, success must be built on strong foundations.

“Our main priority in the coming months is to create a solid foundation for the future. This means building a strong front office, selecting the best coaches available, and then developing the entire franchise around our players. Everything we do must be sustainable and focused on long-term growth.”

This means that the first victories for the Red Lions may happen behind the scenes. Creating professional structures, defining responsibilities, and establishing clear processes are just as important as building the roster.

“I truly believe that this is a marathon, not a sprint.”

The message is clear. The Red Lions are not planning for just one season. They are building a long-term project for the future of football in Florence.

Building a professional culture

Iaccarino’s previous experience in European football has shaped his philosophy. He believes that culture is the foundation of every successful team.

“We always focused on building long-term projects by investing in young talent. We need to create a true professional culture, both on and off the field, and that takes time, patience, and consistency.”

For him, professionalism includes daily preparation, communication, discipline, and respect. The Red Lions want to represent Florence and Italy with pride and responsibility.

Coaching first, roster second

When it comes to recruitment, Iaccarino makes it clear that the coaching staff comes first.

“Our first priority is to assemble a full-time coaching staff. A group of professionals who will work every day to put our players in the best possible position to succeed on game day.”

Only after building this structure will the roster fully take shape. The plan is to create balance.

“We will build a balanced mix of local players and imports. We also need to respect the Italian season and the commitments that local players already have with their current teams. That said, I am confident that we will put together a very competitive roster.”

This balanced approach shows that the Red Lions want to strengthen Italian football while also raising the competitive level.

Growing the game in Florence

For the first season, the goals go beyond wins and losses. The organization wants to build a connection with the city.

“Our main goal is to create a new fan base in Florence. We want to bring people closer not only to our franchise, but also to American football in Italy.”

The focus is on offering a complete experience on game day.

“Our aim is to attract a new generation of fans and offer them a high-quality product. A real show that people will want to experience.”

The Red Lions want to create energy in the stadium and establish American football as an exciting part of Florence’s sports culture.

Defining long term success

When speaking about the future, Iaccarino does not focus only on titles. He talks about reputation and stability.

“Success means building a stable, respected, and competitive franchise that represents our city and our country in the best possible way.”

The key milestones are clear. A strong organizational structure, development of local talent, growth of a loyal supporter base, and consistent playoff appearances.

“If, in a few years, our franchise is recognized for its professionalism, player development, and connection with the community, then I will consider our project a success.”

With Bart Iaccarino leading the way, the Firenze Red Lions are building more than just a team. They are building a long-term vision for football in Italy.
