Two quarterbacks, two stories, one unbeaten record on the line

When Rhein Fire travel to Vienna this week, the game has everything you could want from a marquee AFLE matchup. Two unbeaten teams. A packed Generali Arena. And at the centre of it all, a quarterback duel that tells two very different stories about how you build a winning football team.

The man who knows it all versus the man proving himself

Ben Holmes has been the heartbeat of the Vienna Vikings for three seasons now. The quarterback his fans simply call „BenVP“ knows every corner of the playbook, every receiver’s tendencies, every situation. He has led the team to back-to-back championship game appearances. He is comfortable, dangerous and deeply trusted.

On the other sideline, Kenji Bahar is writing a very different kind of chapter. This is his first season in Europe and his first year as the Rhein Fire franchise quarterback. He brings serious credentials, a standout college career at Monmouth, time in the USFL with the Houston Gamblers, and multiple stints with the Baltimore Ravens. But he is still finding his rhythm in a new system under first-year head coach Mark Ridgley. Through one game, the signs have been encouraging. The question is whether he can deliver on the road in a hostile atmosphere.

Twenty years versus year one

The contrast does not stop at the quarterbacks. Chris Calaycay has been part of the Vienna Vikings organisation since 2004 and has been head coach since 2007. He has seen everything this franchise has to offer, built its culture from the inside and won seven Austrian championships, five Euro Bowls and an ELF Championship along the way. His team knows exactly what it is and how it plays.

Ridgley is on the other end of that timeline. He arrives in Duisburg with strong NFL credentials, experience as offensive coordinator in Madrid and a head coaching stint in Fehérvár, but this is his first season running Rhein Fire. The roster around him is talented. Jonathan Scott is a proven weapon in the backfield. Kaylon Geiger Sr. and Harlan Kwofie give Bahar genuine options on the outside. The offensive line is built to protect. But the chemistry that Holmes and Calaycay have built over years takes time, and right now Fire are still in the process of building it.

Unfinished business from last season

There is another layer to this game. When these two teams met last season, they split the series. Fire went to Vienna and won. Vienna came to Duisburg and won. That means the Vikings arrive at the Generali Arena with something to prove. In front of a crowd that can reach up to 17,500, in a stadium they specifically chose for this fixture, they want to make it clear that no team is coming into their home and leaving with a win.

Fire know exactly what that record means too. They are unbeaten and they intend to stay that way. Bahar has played one game, Holmes two. Both quarterbacks are sharp, both have weapons around them and both offensive lines are strong. Whoever wins the chess match between these two signal callers will likely win the game.

A matchup worth watching

Yannick Mayr burned defenders for a 44-yard and a 54-yard touchdown in Week 2 and his connection with Holmes is growing by the week. Noah Touré remains one of the safest targets in the league. Darrell Stewart Jr. brings top-end experience. For Fire, Kwofie is a fan favourite for a reason, and Geiger brings the kind of yards-after-catch ability that can change a game in a single play.

Both teams want to leave the Generali Arena unbeaten. Only one of them can. With Holmes and Bahar under centre, it should be a game worth watching until the very last snap.
