Vienna Vikings Dominate Berlin Thunder in Historic AFLE Opener
The American Football League Europe got off to a thunderous start, though perhaps not the kind Berlin had in mind. In front of 4,000 fans, the Vienna Vikings crushed the Berlin Thunder 49–7 to claim the very first win in AFLE history.
A Costly Gamble to Start
Berlin came out with a solid opening drive, pushing all the way down to the 4-yard line. Instead of taking the easy points, they went for the touchdown and didn’t get it. That decision set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Vienna’s Ground Game Takes Over
From there, Vienna’s offense took over. The Vikings‘ offensive line was a wall, opening up running lanes at will. Finnish running back Karri Pajarinen and German Albert Wiesigstrauch each topped 100 rushing yards with a touchdown, making Berlin’s front seven look helpless throughout.
Iceman Freezes the Thunder
It wasn’t just the offense doing the damage. On the other side of the ball, Spanish defensive end Alejandro „Iceman“ Fernandez was uncontrollable, sacking Thunder quarterback Jakeb Sullivan three times and disrupting nearly every drive Berlin put together.
Penalties Seal Berlin’s Fate
Berlin’s troubles were compounded by a stunning lack of discipline, 13 penalties for 118 yards, nearly wiping out all their offensive yardage in the first half alone.
A historic first game, and a statement win for Vienna.
