Vienna Vikings ready to chase the first AFLE crown with Europe’s most complete roster

The 2026 season of the American Football League Europe is shaping up to be one of the biggest moments yet for European American football, and few teams enter the year with more pressure, or more talent, than the Vienna Vikings. With a proven coaching staff, elite imports, and one of the deepest homegrown cores in Europe, Vienna looks built for a championship run from Week 1.

Ben Holmes gives the Vikings stability at quarterback

Continuity at quarterback is rare in European football, which makes the return of Ben Holmes one of the most important storylines for Vienna entering the AFLE era.

The American QB already understands the Vikings system, the locker room culture, and the expectations that come with playing for one of Europe’s flagship franchises. That familiarity matters in a league where offensive chemistry often decides games early in the season.

Holmes recently described Vienna as “a second home” for both himself and his family, while emphasizing the “mindset, preparation and passion” needed to chase another title.

Head coach Chris Calaycay has made it clear how valuable Holmes is to the organization. When the quarterback originally signed with Vienna, Calaycay said: “It is an amazing feeling to get your quarterback signed.” He also added that Holmes “fits perfectly to the team and the system in Vienna.”

On the field, Holmes brings mobility, deep-ball accuracy, and leadership at the line of scrimmage. More importantly, he already has established timing with one of the strongest receiver groups in the AFLE.

Yannick Mayr headlines an explosive Vikings offense

Few European receivers combine speed, experience, and versatility like Yannick Mayr.

The Austrian national team player arrives in 2026 as one of the most respected homegrown playmakers in Europe after productive seasons with the Stuttgart Surge and Raiders Tirol. AFLE scouting reports called him “one of Europe’s fastest,” and his résumé supports the hype.

Mayr’s athletic profile also attracted NFL and CFL attention in recent years, and his experience playing multiple offensive roles makes him difficult to defend. Whether lining up outside or in the slot, he stretches defenses vertically and opens running lanes underneath.

When announcing Mayr’s arrival, Calaycay said: “We are so happy to welcome Yannick to Vienna.”

The Vikings also benefit from Mayr’s existing chemistry with offensive coordinator Jordan Neuman, who previously coached him in Stuttgart. That connection should help Vienna’s passing attack operate at full speed immediately.

Alongside Holmes and Mayr, Finnish running back Karri Pajarinen gives the offense balance. Pajarinen adds physical downhill running but also enough speed to punish defenses on outside zone concepts and screen plays.

Defense could make Vienna the team to beat

While the offense grabs headlines, Vienna’s defense may ultimately become the reason this team dominates the AFLE.

The biggest addition is pass rusher Alejandro Fernandez, a former ELF All-Star who joins Vienna after productive years across Europe. Fernandez enters the season motivated after injuries slowed him over the last two years. The Vikings believe he can return to elite form immediately, especially inside a defensive front loaded with talent.

The secondary looks equally dangerous. Benjamin Straight continues his rise as one of Europe’s emerging defensive stars after developing into an All-Star caliber defensive back. Meanwhile, veteran DB Marloshawn Franklin brings experience, physicality, and proven ball skills against top-level European competition.

That combination gives defensive coordinator Daniel Auböck the flexibility to disguise coverages, blitz aggressively, and trust his secondary in man coverage.

Top-notch coaching staff in Vienna

The coaching staff is another major reason why the Vikings enter the AFLE season with such high expectations. Head coach Chris Calaycay has built a long-term winning culture in Vienna, defined by discipline, adaptability, and strong player development.

Offensive coordinator Jordan Neuman adds a modern, aggressive passing approach that maximizes quarterback Ben Holmes’ strengths and keeps the offense unpredictable. Around them, an experienced European coaching group provides continuity on both sides of the ball, ensuring that the system is not only talented but also well-drilled and consistent.

On the defensive side, Austrian defensive coordinator Daniel Auböck plays a crucial role in shaping the unit’s identity. As one of the key local voices in the coaching staff, he brings both regional continuity and tactical intelligence to the group.

This combination of Calaycay’s leadership, Neuman’s offensive innovation, and Auböck’s defensive structure gives Vienna one of the most complete coaching setups in the AFLE.

Why the Vikings are favorites in the AFLE

The Vikings are not simply talented, they are complete.

They have continuity at quarterback, elite speed at wide receiver, proven European stars on defense, and one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the game. The organization itself also carries a championship standard after decades of success in Austrian and European football.

There is pressure that comes with that status. That hype creates expectations, but the Vikings appear ready for it. If Holmes stays healthy and the defense performs to its potential, Vienna should finish near the top of the standings immediately. Anything less than an AFLE Championship Game appearance would feel disappointing for a roster this loaded.Right now, the Vikings do not just look like contenders. They look like the standard every other AFLE team will spend the season trying to reach.
