Vikings DC Daniel Auböck: “I am proud to represent the Austrian coaching community in the AFLE”

The Vienna Vikings enter the new AFLE season with championship expectations once again. And much of that pressure falls on a defense that has become one of the most respected units in European football. Leading that group is Defensive Coordinator Daniel Auböck, a lifelong Vikings figure whose journey from player to coach perfectly reflects the organization’s identity.

After the 1-0 start to the Vikings season, their defensive coordinator makes clear why they are so successful.

Vienna Vikings defense built on homegrown football culture

In a league where many franchises rely heavily on imported coaching talent, the Vikings continue to trust their own system. Auböck is one of the few true homegrown coordinators on Europe’s biggest football stage, and he sees that responsibility as something bigger than himself.

“Very blessed and grateful for this opportunity,” Auböck said. “I believe our defensive staff, me included, put in the work over many years to deserve this chance.”

At the same time, he believes European coaches still do not always receive enough recognition. “It is a bit sad that not more European coaches get the chance to show their abilities on Europe’s biggest stage,” he explained. “I am definitely proud to represent the Austrian […] coaching community in the AFLE.”

That philosophy extends through the entire Vikings defensive coaching staff, which is almost completely homegrown. For Auböck, that continuity is not accidental; it is part of what makes the organization special.

“All of them live and breathe football,” he said about his staff. “We don’t take shortcuts and we challenge each other on a daily basis, just like we do with our players.”

Vikings defensive identity focused on physical football

The Vikings defense has consistently ranked among Europe’s elite over the last several seasons. According to Auböck, the formula behind that success is actually simple.

“To me it comes down to three simple points,” he explained. “Being sound in scheme and technique, having great pursuit of the ball, and being the most physical unit on the field.”

That mentality has become a trademark of Vienna football and also showed in their Week 1 win over the Berlin Thunder at home last Saturday with a final score of 49 – 7. While many modern defenses focus heavily on disguise and complexity, the Vikings prioritize execution, discipline, and relentless effort.

“If our defense does those three things on a play-by-play basis, we will be alright,” Auböck said. The coordinator also pushed back slightly against the idea that the Vikings system alone creates success. Instead, he credits the players for bringing the scheme to life.

“Players make the scheme come to life,” he said. “Scheme alone won’t win you anything.”

The “Vikings DNA” still drives the locker room

Few coaches embody the Vikings organization more authentically than Auböck. He spent 14 years as a player before coaching youth football, working his way through every level of the program.

“The ‘Vikings DNA’ means everything to me,” he said. “All these stages are a part of me and helped to make me who I am today.”

That DNA, according to Auböck, is rooted in work ethic and accountability. “The Vikings DNA is built on winning through hard work,” he explained. “Players, coaches, management, we all grind to be worthy of success.”

Going undefeated into Week 2

Now, after their win against the Thunder in Week 1, the focus turns toward Week 2 against the Wroclaw Panthers, a matchup that will test Vienna’s physical identity once again. Auböck knows perfection is unrealistic, especially early in the season, but he expects his defense to establish a clear message.

“Football is an imperfect game. Always has been, always will be,” he said. “This defense won’t be perfect.” Still, his final warning to opponents sounded confident.

“Fans, teammates, and especially opponents can expect this unit to be the fastest and most punishing in all of Europe,” Auböck said. “The intensity with which this unit plays will be seen, heard and felt.” In Week 1, his team allowed only seven points to the Berlin Thunder. If the Vikings defense keeps up this pace in Week 2 against the Panthers, the rest of the AFLE may already have its benchmark for 2026.
