Week 12 delivered everything fans could ask for
Three one-score games, three matches decided in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, playoff hopes extinguished and single-game records shattered. Week 12 of the inaugural AFLE season had it all.
Warriors survive, Lights fall short
London Warriors needed a comeback and they got one. Paris Lights led early with two touchdowns and defended hard throughout, but the Warriors‘ ground game wore them down and their passing offense found its rhythm when it mattered. Two fourth quarter interceptions from Lights quarterback Evan Hillock proved fatal, with defensive back Stef Atidzah returning one for a pick six to seal a 34-26 victory. Defensive end Jezreel Agu was the standout performer with three sacks and five tackles for loss. Paris, held to just 20 rushing yards all game, saw their playoff hopes effectively ended. London’s playoff place is now confirmed, with only seeding still to be decided.
Panthers pull off the comeback of the season
Vienna Vikings looked untouchable after the first quarter, leading by two scores and playing like the dominant team they had been all season. Panthers Wroclaw had other ideas. An eight-point deficit at halftime became a second half masterclass, with the Panthers‘ passing game doing all the heavy lifting on 294 receiving yards while their defense forced turnovers, stopped drives and pulled in an interception to keep the Vikings at bay. The final score of 34-31 brought an end to Vienna’s unbeaten run and means that for the first time this season, no AFLE team remains undefeated. For the Panthers, this was more than just a win. Those who doubted whether Wroclaw could step up against the league’s very best have their answer, and this performance will likely go down as the greatest in franchise history.
Bachmeier arrives, records fall in an instant classic
If the Panthers game was the game of the season, the Alpine Rams and Firenze Red Lions ran it close. New Rams quarterback Hank Bachmeier announced himself in style, completing around 80 percent of his passes for over 550 yards, five touchdowns and a perfect passer rating of 158.3, breaking Jakeb Sullivan’s single game passing yards record in the process. Kevin Kaya was the primary weapon with over 200 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Firenze responded through Eystin Salum and Mali Harris-Strayhorn but could not keep pace. The Red Lions had one final chance to force overtime on their last drive, only for a penalty to erase a would-be touchdown and a blocked field goal attempt to end it. The combined total of nearly 1,200 yards produced numbers that would turn heads in any league in the world, and this game will live long in the memory not just for those who were in the stadium but for everyone who watched it on their screens at home.
The first AFLE season has saved its best for last
Records broken, comebacks completed, critics silenced. With two regular season weeks remaining, the four playoff teams are set: London Warriors, Vienna Vikings, Panthers Wroclaw and Rhein Fire. The Fire have already clinched the North/West Conference title and secured a home semifinal. For the other three, the exact seedings are still to be decided and will be fought out over the coming weeks. Nobody knows how this inaugural season ends. That is exactly how it should be.
