“We’re building something special”Frantzy Dorlean shaping the identity of the Paris Lights

As the Paris Lights prepare for their first season in the American Football League Europe, General Manager Frantzy Dorlean is focused on building more than just a competitive roster. His priority is clear: establish a strong identity and a professional structure that will last well beyond year one.

The first key decision

Every new franchise is defined by its first leadership choices. For Paris, that moment came with the appointment of David Shelton as head coach.

“David brings a rare combination of leadership, experience, and vision,” Dorlean said. “What stood out to us is not only his football IQ, but his ability to build culture and develop players.”

For Dorlean, the role of a first head coach goes far beyond strategy. It is about setting standards across the entire organization.

“From the beginning, we were looking for someone who could set the tone for the entire organization, and David embodies excellence, discipline, and accountability.”

With Shelton in place, the Lights have established the leadership model they want to follow.

Building with patience and structure

While expectations in a major market like Paris are naturally high, Dorlean speaks about long-term development rather than quick success.

“Our vision is to build a strong, competitive, and respected organization from the start. This first season is about laying solid foundations.”

That foundation includes internal organization, daily standards, and competitive consistency. The goal is to create credibility from the very beginning.

“We want to be a team that competes every week, but also one that represents professionalism and excellence in everything we do.”

The message is clear. Paris wants to earn respect through preparation and discipline.

A clear football identity

Dorlean’s vision for the team on the field reflects that same clarity.

“On the field, we want to be disciplined, physical, and smart, a team that plays fast and executes at a high level.”

The Lights aim to combine physical intensity with controlled execution. At the same time, Dorlean emphasizes that identity extends beyond game day.

“Off the field, we want to represent professionalism, unity, and purpose.”

For him, the organization should reflect the character of the city it represents.

Chemistry over individual headlines

Roster construction is progressing steadily, but Dorlean avoids short-term thinking.

“We’ve made strong progress in building the core of the roster. At this stage, it’s not just about filling positions, it’s about completing the right chemistry.”

When evaluating players, he focuses on long-term fit rather than short-term excitement.

“If I had to prioritize, I would say character and fit. Talent can take you far, but character and mindset determine consistency and long-term success.”

That approach underlines the organization’s commitment to stability rather than quick fixes.

Representing Paris authentically

Operating in one of Europe’s most visible cities carries responsibility. Dorlean sees local connection as a strategic priority.

“It’s extremely important. We want the Paris Lights to truly represent Paris and France.”

The plan is to develop and highlight French talent while also adding international experience to remain competitive.

The balance between identity and performance will define the roster.

Creating standards from scratch

Starting a franchise from zero requires clarity. There are no inherited traditions, so expectations must be defined early.

“There are many challenges. Everything has to be created from scratch,” Dorlean said. “But it’s a unique opportunity to build things the right way from the beginning.”

Inside the locker room, leadership will be decisive.

“Culture starts with leadership. We’re setting clear expectations from day one: accountability, discipline, and unity.”

As someone who has experienced the game from within, Dorlean adds one important point.

“In the locker room, the players have to take control.”

A message for the supporters

As kickoff approaches, Dorlean makes it clear that the project is meant to be shared with the city.

“We’re building something special, and we want the fans to be part of it from the beginning. This team will represent Paris with pride, passion, and excellence.”

With a defined structure, clear standards, and long-term ambition, the Paris Lights are not simply entering a new league. They are building a foundation designed to grow with every season.
