Wrocław Panthers hold off Paris Lights comeback in crucial AFLE Week 3 win

The Wrocław Panthers left Paris with an important AFLE Week 3 victory, but the final score did not tell the full story. After dominating the first half, the Panthers were forced to withstand a determined comeback from the Paris Lights, who showed significant improvement after halftime despite suffering their first loss of the season.

Panthers controlled first half

The Panthers established control early, taking advantage of difficult weather conditions and capitalizing on mistakes by the home team, going up 22-0 at halftime. While the wet field created challenges for both offenses, Wrocław adapted better and built a comfortable lead.

Defensive captain Hubert Ogrodowczyk acknowledged the impact of the conditions.

“The first half was pretty tough because of the weather conditions,” he said. “We got that one better. We scored a lot of points.”

The Panthers‘ defense played a key role in that strong start, limiting explosive plays and forcing Paris into uncomfortable situations throughout the opening two quarters.

Paris Lights showed their potential

Although the first half belonged to Wrocław, the momentum shifted dramatically after the break. As the weather improved and the sun emerged, Paris looked like a different football team.

“The second half was totally different,” Ogrodowczyk said. “The sun came out and a different team [from] Paris appeared.”

The Lights offense found rhythm, while the defense began making more plays. Defensive back Mark Collins highlighted the team’s determination to keep fighting despite the early deficit.

“I feel like we just had to keep building off of that,” Collins said. “I feel like we did that in the secondary.” Collins also pointed to one of the defense’s achievements against one of the Panthers’ biggest offensive weapons. “Mike Harley, a great receiver, we held him to our standard that we expected to,” Collins said. “Zero catches in the first half.”

Despite the loss, the performance reinforced the belief that Paris can compete with some of the league’s strongest teams. “There’s a huge potential in the Paris team,” Ogrodowczyk said after the game. “There’s a lot of talent, there’s a lot of potential. I believe there’s a great future ahead of them.”

Faster starts remain key for Paris

For the second consecutive week, the Lights found themselves chasing the game after a slow start. Collins believes the solution begins long before kickoff.

“I think practice habits,” he said. “We got to start faster in practice. We know we got to come into practice ready to go as soon as it starts.” That urgency was a recurring theme throughout his postgame comments. “The biggest thing is urgency,” Collins explained. “Don’t wait until the second half to put the foot on the gas. We gotta just be ready to go as soon as that ball’s off.”

Panthers leave Paris with momentum

While Paris earned respect for its resilience, Wrocław ultimately did enough to secure the win. According to Ogrodowczyk, the Panthers simply focused on staying true to their identity. “We just have to play our game,” he said. “I think we made less mistakes than in the first half.”

That approach proved enough to survive a dangerous comeback and keep the Panthers moving forward. As Week 3 comes to a close, Wrocław remains among the AFLE’s top contenders, while Paris leaves the game with clear lessons and plenty of reasons to believe its best football is still ahead. Will the Lights have a better start against the Rhein Fire in Week 4?
