The AFLE introduces Spanish solidarity rule for the 2026 season
The American Football League of Europe (AFLE) has announced a temporary solidarity measure for the 2026 season. Spain will be recognized as a Homegrown territory for all franchises competing in The League Europe.
This decision follows the closure of operations of the Madrid Bravos. The AFLE would like to express its respect for the work the organization has done for American football in Spain and recognizes the efforts of the players, coaches, and staff who were part of the franchise. The league also wants to show its support for the Spanish football community during this period.
Supporting Spanish players
With this measure, AFLE aims to provide affected players with the opportunity to continue their careers at a high level in European football.
Under the new rule, all AFLE franchises are allowed to sign eligible Spanish players as Homegrown athletes for the 2026 season. This regulation applies specifically to players who were part of the active roster of the Madrid Bravos for the 2026 season.
The league wants to support the players during this period of transition and help ensure they continue to have opportunities to compete at a high level in European football.
Clear opportunity with competitive balance
Each franchise will be permitted to sign up to three additional Spanish players under this rule.
This limit ensures that Spanish players have a pathway to remain active in European football while also maintaining competitive balance across the league.
A temporary measure for the 2026 season
The Spanish player solidarity rule will apply for the 2026 season only. AFLE hopes this step will support the affected players while continuing to promote the development of American football across Europe.
For the league, the decision reflects a clear principle: supporting the players, supporting the sport, and showing respect for the work that has been done to grow the game in Spain.
