Homegrowns of the Week 1
Week 1 is in the books, and while the long offseason was still noticeable in a moment or two, several homegrown players stepped up and made a strong case for themselves. Here is a look at the European talents who caught the eye in the opening week.
Kouanda Shines Bright Despite Heavy Loss
German receiver Bais Kouanda put together an impressive performance, even though his team, the Berlin Thunder, went down 7-49 against the Vienna Vikings. The 24-year-old was one of the few bright spots on the night, hauling in nine catches for 113 yards. Kouanda showed both reliable hands and the ability to make big plays after the catch, and was clearly one of the main targets for quarterback Jakeb Sullivan alongside American receiver Jon Cole.
London’s Tight End Duo Makes a Statement
Two British tight ends had a standout debut for the London Warriors in their first game in a European league. Kevin Laryea and Eden Thiede-Palmer gave quarterback Karé Lyles two dependable options in the passing game all game. Laryea finished with six catches for 95 yards, while Thiede-Palmer added another six receptions for 57 yards and two touchdowns. A solid introduction for both players on the continental stage.
Warriors Linebackers Work Hard in Defeat
On the defensive side of the ball, three homegrown linebackers for the Warriors gave everything they had. Kadel King, David Izinyon, and Emmanuelle Falola combined for 32 tackles and had to deal with both the Panthers Wroclaw receivers and their running game. Despite their efforts, they could not turn the tide, just like their teammates on offense, and the Warriors came away with a loss.
Brzozowski Powers Panthers Wroclaw to Victory
One of the key reasons the Panthers Wroclaw offense clicked in Week 1 was Polish running back Dawid Brzozowski. On just 17 carries, he ran for an impressive 144 yards. His biggest moment came just before halftime, when he broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run at a point where the Warriors had just cut the score to 13-7. A statement carry that helped put the game back in control for Panthers Wroclaw.
Week 1 showed that European talent is very much alive and well in the league. Whether it was Kouanda making plays in a tough loss, London’s tight end duo finding their feet on a new stage, or Brzozowski taking over a game with his legs, homegrown players were far from just filling roster spots. With the season just getting started, there is plenty more to come from this group.
