Homegrowns of Week 5
Week 5 brought some of the most exciting homegrown performances of the season so far. A defensive lineman turned playmaker, a backup quarterback with a perfect rating and three offensive weapons lighting up the German derby. Here is a look at the homegrowns who made their mark.
From the defensive line to the end zone
Valentin Gnahoua has experience at the highest level of North American football, and in Week 5 he reminded everyone exactly what that means on a football field. The Paris Lights defensive end was dominant throughout, finishing with four tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass deflection. But the moment that defined his afternoon came when he got his hands on a pass, held on and took it all the way to the end zone. A defensive lineman with an interception and a pick-six is not something you see every week, and it was a performance that showed the full range of what Gnahoua can bring to this Paris defense.
Vienna’s homegrowns shine as Vikings cruise
With the Vikings already well in control, backup quarterback Nico Hrouda stepped in for Ben Holmes midway through the third quarter and made the most of every single snap. He threw for over 170 yards and three touchdowns, posting a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3 in what was a flawless cameo. The chemistry he showed with receiver Nils Keimel was particularly eye-catching, finding him twice for touchdowns in a display that suggested the Vikings have real homegrown depth at the quarterback position should they ever need it.
Three homegrowns take over the German derby
The German derby between Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire was one of the most entertaining games of the season, and three homegrown offensive players were right at the heart of it. Kai Hunter and Bais Kouanda on the Thunder side were a genuine handful all afternoon, combining for four touchdowns between them and showing why Berlin’s homegrown offense is one of the most exciting in the league. On the other sideline, Harlan Kwofie was Kenji Bahar’s go-to option throughout, hauling in eight receptions and adding a receiving touchdown to his tally. A fan favourite delivering in a derby game, exactly what the crowd came to see.
Week 5 was another chapter in a story that keeps getting better. The homegrown talent across this league continues to grow with every passing week, and with the season approaching its halfway point, the best is very likely still to come.
