How Jon Cole went from State MVP to AFLE Offensive Player of the Year
Jon Cole did not take the straightforward path to the top. He earned every step of it. The Berlin Thunder wide receiver capped the inaugural AFLE season as Offensive Player of the Year and the holder of every major receiving record the league has to offer. This is how he got there.
Built for the game
Cole showed his athletic gifts early. As a young player he was active in both football and track and field, a combination that shaped the speed, precision and explosiveness that define his game to this day. At Trinity Christian High School, those qualities earned him the State MVP award, an early sign that this was a player worth watching.
The long road through college
Despite that recognition, Cole’s college journey did not begin at a major program. He started at Pima Community College, used his time there to develop and earned his move to Arizona Christian University. What followed was one of the most impressive individual careers in NAIA football. Cole led the entire league in receiving yards in 2021, was named to the First NAIA Team and was recognised as the best athlete in the Sooner Athletic Conference. For a player who had to fight for his opportunities, the statement could not have been clearer.
Making his mark in Germany
After college, Cole crossed the Atlantic and arrived in Germany with the Kirchdorf Wildcats in the GFL 2. The transition was seamless. In his first season he recorded 44 receptions for 1,024 yards, averaging an extraordinary 23.3 yards per catch. The numbers announced him to European football in the most direct way possible.
Comeback and confirmation
His next stop in European football did not begin smoothly. Injuries disrupted his first year and kept him off the field when he should have been making his case. When he returned, however, there was nothing subtle about it. Cole crossed the 1,000-yard mark again, with only two players across the entire league finishing more productive. That campaign earned him the Comeback Player of the Year award and left no doubt about what he was capable of when healthy and given the chance to play.
Dominating the AFLE from day one
When Cole arrived at Berlin Thunder for the inaugural AFLE season, he picked up exactly where he had left off. Alongside quarterback Jakeb Sullivan, he formed one of the most dangerous partnerships in the league, a reliable, relentless presence in the Thunder offense who opponents knew was coming and still could not stop. Give him the ball and he produced. Every single week.
By the end of the season, Cole had completed one of the most dominant individual campaigns the league has ever seen, winning the receiving triple crown by leading the AFLE in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He was named the first ever Offensive Player of the Year in American Football League Europe history.
The numbers that will take some beating
98 catches. 1,369 receiving yards. 22 touchdowns. Cole did not just outperform his rivals this season. He set benchmarks that every receiver in the league will be measured against for years to come.
