Panthers Push Vikings to the Limit in Thrilling Week 2 Battle
The Vienna Vikings may have left Wroclaw with a 43-23 victory and a perfect 2-0 record, but the scoreline does not tell the full story of what was an absorbing and chaotic afternoon in Poland.
A game the Panthers could have won
The Panthers Wroclaw came agonizingly close to handing the Vikings their first defeat. On their very first drive of the game, Wroclaw fumbled and gave Vienna an early gift. That alone could have broken the spirit of a lesser team, but the Panthers kept competing and kept pushing. Their finest moment came when they drove all the way down to Vienna’s five-yard line, on the verge of what could have been a momentum-shifting score. Another fumble. Another costly turnover. Two drives, two opportunities, two fumbles that ultimately proved the difference between a Panthers victory and the final scoreline.
The Vikings showed their championship DNA
Credit where it is due to Vienna. In a game this chaotic, with fumbles, blocked kicks and big plays flying in both directions, the Vikings kept their composure and found a way to win. Defensive back Benjamin Straight was central to that, forcing two fumbles that swung the game’s momentum at critical moments. Ben Holmes was equally impressive, throwing for 349 yards and four touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 148.2.
Wroclaw showed they belong
Jameson Wang’s performance deserves recognition even in defeat. He completed 32 of 43 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns, adding 30 rushing yards on top of that. This was not a Panthers team that was dominated. It was a Panthers team that gave the best side in the league a serious test and came within a couple of moments of pulling off one of the results of the season.
The Vikings go to 2-0. But on another day, with a little more ball security, this could easily have been a Panthers victory.
