Paris ready to make a statement against the Panthers
Paris Lights are set to host Panthers Wroclaw in what could be one of the most interesting games of the young AFLE season. For the Lights it is their first home game as a franchise. For the Panthers it is a chance to prove they are the real deal. Both teams have a point to prove and both have the tools to win.
Panthers need to stay out of their own way
Panthers Wroclaw have looked impressive in both of their opening games. In Week 1 they handled the London Warriors with authority. In Week 2 against Vienna Vikings, they showed they can compete with the best in the league, but they gave the game away with their own mistakes. Five quarterback sacks is simply too many. When Jameson Wang is under constant pressure, the Panthers offense cannot function the way it should. The big plays are there. The talent is there. The key for the Panthers this week is simple: protect the quarterback, run the ball and convert the chances they create.
Brzozowski must be a factor
One of the most dangerous weapons in all of European football lines up in the Panthers backfield. Dawid Brzozowski has shown in the opening weeks that he is a genuine difference maker, but the Panthers have not always given him the ball often enough to stay in rhythm. If Paris manages to neutralize the running game, the Panthers offense becomes one-dimensional and much easier to defend. Getting Brzozowski going early and keeping him involved is not just an option for the Panthers. It is a necessity.
Wang and Harley looking for another big day
The connection between Jameson Wang and Mike Harley Jr. has been the engine of the Panthers offense through two weeks. Harley leads the league in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and has delivered in every single game so far. He will want to make it three in a row. Paris defensive backs Marque Collins and Exavier Edward know exactly what is coming and will do everything they can to slow him down and force Wang to look elsewhere. Whether Wang can spread the ball and keep Paris honest will be one of the most important questions of the game.
Paris have more than just hope
The Lights may be new to this level and still finding their rhythm as a team, but they showed real promise in their opening game against the Firenze Red Lions. After a slow start, the offense grew into the match and the pieces started to click. A non-American quarterback operating alongside two talented American wide receivers is a rare combination in this league and one the Panthers will not have seen much of. If that connection keeps developing, Paris can cause real problems.
The biggest threat from a Paris perspective comes upfront. Defensive lineman Wilfried Pene, who has experience training with the New England Patriots organisation, was outstanding in Week 2 with 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a tackle for loss. He will come after Wang with everything he has and the Panthers offensive line will need to match the kind of performance they put in during Week 1 to keep their quarterback clean.
A game that could go either way
On paper the Panthers are the stronger side. But Paris are at home, they are improving and they have the defensive weapons to make this uncomfortable. If the Panthers protect the ball and play their game, they win. If they give Paris chances and let Pene wreck the pocket, the Lights have every reason to believe they can pull off the upset.
