Rams DC Everett Withers brings NFL and Division I experience to the Alps
The Alpine Rams have made a major statement for the upcoming season by appointing
Everett Withers as defensive coordinator. With more than 35 years of coaching experience
across the NFL and Division I college football, Withers arrives in Switzerland with a history
built on defensive excellence, leadership and success.
From the NFL and college football to Switzerland
Withers’ career spans eight years in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans
and New York Giants, where he coached defensive backs and helped implement pro-level
schemes and preparation standards. At the collegiate level, he served as head coach at
James Madison, Texas State and North Carolina, and as defensive coordinator at
powerhouse programs such as Ohio State, Louisville, Temple, FIU, Minnesota and North
Carolina. Teams he coached reached 11 bowl games, a reflection of his ability to build
competitive, disciplined units.
Yet despite that success, Withers felt it was time for something new. “I love the game of
football and the lessons it teaches,” he said. “There are so many distractions in the US for
coaches, players and administrators that have nothing to do with the team, technique, or
fundamentals that I needed to find that in its simplest phase.”
That search led him to Switzerland. “A fresh start in a beautiful place like Switzerland was
something I couldn’t pass up!” Withers explained.
Building the Rams defense with clear principles
Withers has already visited Biel and connected with head coach Joshua Fitzgerald. “It was a
great visit!’” he said of their early meetings. “Joshua and I have had many conversations and
I am very confident and excited to help grow football on a positive level in Switzerland.”
His defensive philosophy is direct and rooted in fundamentals. “My coaching philosophy is
simple. Defensively, we have to be an extension of our offense. Getting them the ball back
as many times as possible is the goal.”
For Withers, a successful defense is defined by five core objectives: “Create negative plays
for your opponent. Eliminate the ‘explosive offensive plays.’ Win 3rd- and 4th-down. Win the
red zone. And last but not least create turnovers.”
Focus on communication and execution
While Withers’ biography speaks for itself, he measures defensive success in simple terms.
“A successful defense to me looks like eleven guys on the field communicating as one unit
and executing defensive calls at a high level,” he said.
That emphasis on communication and collective discipline highlights his reputation as a
mentor and teacher. Throughout his career, Withers has been known for investing in player
development both on and off the field, a trait the Alpine Rams believe will elevate their entire
program.
A journey for the Rams and their fans
Withers understands that building a strong defensive identity in Switzerland will take time. But he is eager to start the process and connect with the fan base. “I would like for fans to go with us on the journey. Ride the highs and the lows as we build a team in Switzerland that they can be excited about,” he said.
The Alpine Rams are betting that Withers’ energy, humility and decades of elite experience
will translate into a disciplined, aggressive unit on the field. If his track record is any indication, the Rams defense is about to be dangerous, grounded in fundamentals, driven by
communication and built to compete.
