What is a screen pass in American football?

Not every big play in football comes from a deep throw downfield. Sometimes the most effective thing an offense can do is throw the ball just a few yards forward and let the players in front of the receiver do the work. That is the idea behind the screen pass, one of the most clever and satisfying plays in the game when it is executed well.

What a screen pass is

A screen pass is a short forward pass, usually thrown behind or just beyond the line of scrimmage, to a receiver who has a group of blockers already set up in front of him. The most common version is the running back screen, where the quarterback throws a short pass to his running back on the edge of the field after a wall of offensive linemen have slipped out from their blocking assignments to lead the way.

Wide receiver screens work similarly, with blockers setting up ahead of a receiver who catches the ball near the line and tries to use the blocks to gain yards in open space. Tight end screens are another variation, often used in the middle of the field where a big body can break tackles after the catch.

The deception behind it

What makes the screen pass work is misdirection. At the snap, the offensive linemen initially let defenders rush past them toward the quarterback as if it is a normal passing play. The quarterback also sells the fake by dropping back and holding the ball a moment longer than usual, encouraging the pass rush to commit fully. Then, once the rushers have gone past the spot where the screen is developing, the linemen release their blocks, slip outside, and set up as lead blockers for the receiver.

If the defense has sent several players rushing after the quarterback, there may be very few defenders left in the area where the screen is thrown. A well-timed screen against an aggressive blitz can turn into a massive gain because the offense essentially has more blockers than the defense has tacklers in that part of the field.

When teams use screen passes

Screens are often called against defenses that blitz frequently or that have a dominant pass rush. By using the defense’s aggression against them, the screen turns pressure into opportunity. They are also used to get the ball into the hands of a playmaking running back in space, giving him room to use his speed and agility rather than running into a packed line.

Teams also use screen passes to slow down a pass rush that has been dominating the game. Once a defense knows that screens are a possibility, their rushers have to hesitate slightly before committing fully, which gives the offensive line more time on standard passing plays. The threat of the screen changes how the defense behaves even when no screen is called.
