What is a touchback in American football?

If you have ever watched a kickoff and seen the play stop immediately without anyone being tackled, you have probably seen a touchback. It happens quickly, it looks almost like nothing happened at all, and yet it has a real impact on where the offense starts its drive. Here is what it means and why it matters.

The definition

A touchback occurs when the ball is kicked into the end zone and the receiving player either catches it there or lets it land there without returning it. Instead of running the ball out, the returner kneels down or simply stays in the end zone. The play is immediately dead and the offense starts its drive from the twenty-five yard line, no matter where in the end zone the ball actually landed.

Touchbacks also happen on punts if the ball rolls into the end zone untouched, and on turnovers if a player carries or knocks the ball into his own end zone and it goes out of bounds there. The result is always the same: the ball comes out to the twenty-five yard line and the offense begins from there.

Why would a team choose a touchback?

On a kickoff, the returner has a choice. He can catch the ball and try to run it back up the field, or he can take the touchback and guarantee his team a start at the twenty-five. The decision depends on how well the kicking team has covered the kick and how much open space there is.

If the coverage team is already closing in fast, a return might only gain a few yards while risking a fumble or an injury. Taking the touchback is the safe play. Starting at the twenty-five is a decent field position, and it costs the offense nothing except the small hope of a big return.

How the NFL changed the rule in 2024

In 2024, the NFL introduced a new kickoff format designed to reduce the number of high-speed collisions on special teams plays. Under the new rules, all kickoffs that are not returned and land in the end zone result in the offense starting at the thirty yard line rather than the twenty-five. This small change made it even more attractive for teams to kick deep and force a touchback, while also giving the returning team a slightly better reward if they choose not to return the ball.

The AFLE plays by NFL rules, which means these updated kickoff regulations apply in European professional football as well. Special teams coordinators in the AFLE will be working with the same calculations as their counterparts in America: how deep to kick, when to go for the touchback, and when to take the risk of a live return.

The difference between a touchback and a safety

New fans sometimes confuse a touchback with a safety, because both involve a player in the end zone. The difference is straightforward. A touchback happens when the ball arrives in the end zone from the other team, such as on a kick. A safety happens when the offense carries the ball into its own end zone and gets tackled there. A safety scores two points for the defence. A touchback scores nothing and simply sets the starting position for the next drive.
