Berlin Thunder HC Shawn Cooper: “I want Berlin Thunder to represent something bigger”
Berlin Thunder are entering the 2026 season with a clear vision in European American Football. With Shawn Cooper taking over as head coach and moving to the AFLE, the franchise is reshaping its identity around culture, competitiveness and long-term success. Cooper’s early statements leave no doubt: this is about building something sustainable in the German capital.
“The transition has been energizing and purposeful”
For Cooper, stepping into the top job has been both demanding and motivating.
“The transition has been energizing and purposeful,” he explained. “Stepping into a role like Head Coach, you immediately feel the responsibility, not just for wins and losses, but for people, structure, and vision.”
Rather than rushing to impose change, Cooper began with evaluation and alignment. “My focus early on has been listening, evaluating honestly, and building trust and alignment across the organization,” he said.
One key principle now defines his offseason: “Trust and clarity create confidence. Players and staff need to know exactly who we are, what we expect, and how we operate.”
Building a Thunder roster with speed and physicality
On the field, Cooper’s priorities are direct and measurable. “On the field, it starts with building a roster that fits our identity. Speed, physicality, and intelligence,” he stated. “We want players who love to compete and who can adapt.”
That approach reflects the demands of modern American Football, where versatility and speed often decide games. Cooper wants a roster that can execute under pressure, whether in a two-minute drill on offense or in critical third-down situations on defense.
Off the field, he places equal emphasis on standards. “Culture is everything. We are building a professional environment built on accountability, trust, and daily standards,” Cooper said.
Embracing new opportunities
The structural shift to the AFLE marks a defining moment for the franchise. Cooper views the transition as a strategic opportunity. “Change creates opportunity. The move to the AFLE gives us a chance to help shape something new and to compete at the top of the evolving European football landscape,” he said.
At the same time, he acknowledges the challenge. “New league, new opponents, new expectations. But organizations that embrace change rather than resist it are the ones that separate themselves,” Cooper emphasized.
His mindset is clear and aggressive: “Our mindset is to embrace and attack and win this opportunity.”
Offensive explosiveness and defensive toughness
From a tactical standpoint, Cooper has already defined what Thunder football should look like in 2026. “Fans can expect a team that plays fast, disciplined, and aggressive,” he said. Offensively, the focus is on stretching the field. “We want to stress defenses horizontally and vertically, and put our playmakers in positions to be explosive.”
For head coach Shawn Cooper, scheme remains secondary to identity. “More than scheme, our identity will be about how we compete. We want to be the most connected and toughest team on the field every week. That’s non-negotiable.”
Developing local talent and setting championship standards in Berlin
A central pillar of Cooper’s philosophy is structured player development. “Development is intentional. It doesn’t happen by accident,” he explained. “The strength of any European organization is rooted in its homegrown players. We want to invest heavily in ours, challenge them, and give them every possible resource to grow into impact players.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Cooper is not hiding from expectations. “Measurably, our goal is to compete for the playoffs and position ourselves as a championship-caliber team. That standard is clear.”
Although his ambitions extend beyond wins. “I want Berlin Thunder to represent something bigger, unity, professionalism, and pride,” he said. With a new league, a defined identity and a head coach focused on trust and accountability, Berlin Thunder are aiming to re-establish themselves as a serious contender in the AFLE. In Cooper’s words, if the culture is right, “sustained success will follow.”
