Bill Shuey takes over as head coach of the Firenze Red Lions

The Firenze Red Lions are entering the 2026 season with a new head coach. Bill Shuey, who was originally appointed as special teams coordinator, defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach, has been promoted to head coach and will also serve as defensive coordinator following the departure of Bart Andrus.

Andrus leaves for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

Bart Andrus has stepped down from his position after receiving an offer he could not turn down. The experienced head coach will take charge of the Chinese women’s flag football national team, with a potential pathway to the 2028 Olympic Games.

Andrus commented: „I’m very sad to be leaving the head coaching position for the Firenze Red Lions but this was an opportunity of a lifetime to work on the world stage and possibly the 2028 Olympic Games.“

With his departure, defensive coordinator Tom Mason also leaves the Red Lions‘ coaching staff.

Shuey steps up to lead the program

Shuey brings more than 25 years of coaching experience to his new role, including 10 years on the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles, four seasons with the Chicago Bears, three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars and most recently a stint with the Miami Dolphins. Throughout his career he has worked across multiple defensive coaching roles, making him a natural fit to combine the head coach and defensive coordinator responsibilities in Florence.

The veteran coach is embracing the challenge ahead: „I’m honored to step into the head coach role and grateful for the opportunity to lead this program. My focus is on building a strong, disciplined football team here in Florence and establishing a culture rooted in accountability, growth, and winning. I’m excited to work with a diverse group of players from around the world and help them reach their full potential both on and off the field.“

A new chapter for the Red Lions

With Shuey now at the helm alongside offensive coordinator Mike Mitchell, the Firenze Red Lions move forward with a clear structure and experienced leadership as they prepare for their debut season in 2026.
