Vienna Vikings sign Sean Trotter, the first Japanese player in AFLE history
The Vienna Vikings continue strengthening their roster for the 2026 season and have added an exciting new player to their defense. Japanese defensive end Sean Trotter joins the Austrian franchise and becomes the first Japanese player in AFLE history.
The 25-year-old defender brings international experience and championship pedigree to the Vikings defense.
Success in Japanese college football
Before joining the Vienna Vikings, Trotter played college football in Japan for Kwansei Gakuin University and later for the OBIC Seagulls. During his time at Kwansei Gakuin University, he helped his team win the college national championship in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
His strong performances in the 2022 season also earned him the prestigious Chuck Mills Trophy. The award is considered the Japanese equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in the United States and is given each year to the best college football player in Japan.
Choosing the Vienna Vikings
For Trotter, the decision to join the Vikings was influenced by the professional environment and the high standards within the organization.
“I chose the Vikings because they are a well organized team and everyone has high standards,” Trotter said. “I felt like I can get better as a player and as a team sharpening each other.”
With the Vikings aiming to compete for a championship in the upcoming season, Trotter hopes to play an important role in the defensive front.
Clear goals for the season
The Japanese defensive end already knows what he wants to bring to the team when the season begins.
“Bring pressure every snap and help the team to win the championship,” Trotter said when asked about his expectations for the year.
With his ability to pressure the quarterback, Trotter is expected to become a valuable piece of the Vikings defensive line.
First time in Europe
Joining the Vikings will also mark an exciting personal experience for Trotter. The move to Austria will be his first time living and playing in Europe.
“It’s my first time in Europe so I can’t wait to experience a whole new culture and city,” Trotter explained. “I’m also looking forward to seeing the beautiful Austrian landscape. I like nature.”
With Sean Trotter joining the team, the Vienna Vikings not only add a talented defender to their roster but also make a small piece of league history as the first AFLE team to sign a Japanese player.
