Chris Calaycay leads the Vienna Vikings into a new era

The Vienna Vikings are one of the most traditional and successful football franchises in Europe. Founded in 1983, the Austrian club has celebrated many achievements over the decades. With 15 Austrian championships, five Euro Bowl titles, and one ELF Championship, the Vikings have built a strong and proud legacy.

As the franchise now enters its first season in The League Europe, one key figure remains unchanged on the sideline: Head Coach Chris Calaycay.

A long-term leader

Chris Calaycay has been part of the Vienna Vikings organization since 2004. In 2007, he became Head Coach – a position he has held ever since. He is not newly appointed and there was no recent contract extension. Instead, he continues in the role he has shaped for nearly two decades.

Before his coaching career, the American played college football at Willamette University. He later joined the Vikings as a quarterback and then moved into coaching, where he quickly became one of the most important figures in the club’s history.

The most successful era in club history

Since Chris Calaycay joined the coaching staff in 2004, the Vienna Vikings have experienced the most successful period in club history. First as Defensive Coordinator and later as Head Coach, he has played a major role in the team’s achievements.

During his time on the coaching staff, the Vikings won seven Austrian championships, five Euro Bowls, and one ELF Championship.

His influence goes beyond trophies. Over the years, he has helped build a clear team identity based on discipline, player development, and a strong winning mentality.

Focused on the AFLE challenge

Now, as the Vienna Vikings prepare for their first season in The League Europe, stability remains a key factor. With Calaycay continuing as Head Coach, the franchise relies on experience and continuity.

The goal remains the same as always: compete at the highest level and fight for another championship.
