Paris Lights defensive end Valentin Gnahoua: “I want to be the best defensive end in the league”
Valentin Gnahoua is not coming to Paris Lights to quietly fill a roster spot. The experienced defensive end has competed in some of Europe’s top leagues and earned a first overall pick in the CFL’s European draft. Now, with Paris Lights entering their first ever season in the AFLE, Gnahoua is ready to be the player who sets the tone on defense.
A competitor drawn to a new challenge
When Paris Lights came into the picture, Gnahoua did not need long to make up his mind. The project matched exactly what he was looking for as a player who thrives when the stakes are high. A new city, a new franchise, a first ever season in the AFLE. For most players, that level of uncertainty might give pause. For Gnahoua, it is the whole appeal.
“I joined Paris Lights because I’m a competitor. I love challenges, and this is a great opportunity to be part of something new and ambitious. The project is exciting, and the contract made sense for me as well,” he said.
What comes across clearly is that Gnahoua is not just looking for a place to play. He is looking for a project worth investing in. Paris Lights, with everything still to be built and everything still to be won, offers exactly that.
“Working hard is not always enough”
Gnahoua’s path to Paris ran through some of the most demanding environments in professional football. His selection as the first overall pick in the CFL’s European draft was a moment of recognition, but the experience that followed proved to be more instructive than any individual honour. Playing at that level, surrounded by professionals who compete for their livelihoods every day, reshaped how he thinks about the game and about himself as a player.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that everything is business, and working hard is not always enough. You have to push even further and constantly prove who you are, every single day,” Gnahoua explained.
That kind of environment leaves a mark. For Gnahoua, it turned into a daily standard that he has carried into every season since. It is not about putting in effort. It is about proving your value continuously, in every rep, in every game, in every interaction. That is the mindset he is now bringing to the Paris Lights locker room.
Unpredictable, physical and impossible to ignore
Ask Gnahoua what kind of player he is, and the answer is direct. He does not talk about systems or schemes. He talks about impact. And when a defensive end describes himself the way Gnahoua does, offensive coordinators tend to take notice.
“I would describe myself as an impact player, someone who can change the course of a game at any moment. I’m unpredictable, hard to control, and I bring a unique presence on the field,” he said.
Those are not empty words for a player with his record. His explosiveness off the snap, his technical ability and his speed make him one of the most dangerous pass rushers in the league. Teams that try to manage him with a single blocker will quickly find that is not enough. For opposing offensive lines, accounting for Gnahoua will be a priority every single week.
Targeting the title from the very first season
Gnahoua makes no effort to temper expectations. He wants to be the best defensive end in the AFLE, and he wants Paris Lights to win the championship. Asked about his personal goals for the season, he does not reach for modest language or qualified ambition. The standard is clear and he states it plainly.
“My goal is to be the best defensive end in the league and to win the championship,” he said.
For a player who has tested himself at a high level on both sides of the Atlantic, those goals reflect a career built on refusing to aim lower than the top. Paris Lights are a new franchise, but Gnahoua is not approaching this season as a building year. He is here to compete now, and to bring the people around him along with him.
“It’s going to be crazy”
Paris Lights are about to play their first ever game in front of supporters who are still getting to know their team. For Gnahoua, that moment represents something worth looking forward to. He has played in front of big crowds before, in loud stadiums, in high-pressure situations. He knows what it feels like when a city gets behind a football team.
“Get ready for this season. The new Paris Lights team is going to be something special. It’s going to be crazy,” he said.
With Valentin Gnahoua leading the defensive line, Paris Lights fans have every reason to take those words seriously.
