Matthew McKay becomes first-ever quarterback of the Firenze Red Lions
The Firenze Red Lions have found their quarterback for the first season in franchise history by signing American quarterback Matthew McKay. The 26-year-old most recently played for the Frankfurt Galaxy, where he showed strong performances over the past two seasons.
Reunion with familiar coaches
McKay will reunite with several coaches from his time in Frankfurt. Head coach Bart Andrus, offensive coordinator Mike Mitchell, and defensive coordinator Tom Mason were all part of the Galaxy coaching staff. This familiarity could help McKay adjust quickly and lead the offense effectively.
Strong passing and running ability
McKay joined the Galaxy in the 2024 season. Due to injuries, he played 14 games over the past two seasons, completing 221 passes for 2,731 yards and 20 touchdowns.
In addition to his passing, McKay is also known as a dual-threat quarterback. He recorded 778 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 115 carries, showing that he can make plays both in the air and on the ground.
Building the offense around McKay
The Red Lions are already building their offense around their new quarterback. With wide receivers Aaron David and Gregorio Giorgi, McKay has his first targets in the passing game. On the offensive line, Abraham Chacón will help protect him and give him time to make plays.
As the first quarterback in franchise history, McKay will play a key role in shaping the identity of the Firenze Red Lions offense in their debut season.
