Canadian defensive Back Kosi Onyeka believes “Berlin deserves a championship”
The Berlin Thunder continue to strengthen their roster ahead of the upcoming AFLE season, adding Canadian defensive back Kosi Onyeka to their secondary. With experience from Canadian college football and the CFL, Onyeka arrives in Europe for the first time.
For Onyeka, the move is more than just a career step. It is an opportunity to be part of the sport’s growth on a new continent in a newly formed league.
A new chapter in European American football
Making the jump to Europe is a significant moment in Onyeka’s career, and one he has been looking forward to. “Yes, this will be my first time playing football in Europe,” Onyeka said. “I’ve heard nothing but good things about the growing culture.”
The decision to join Berlin Thunder was driven by both ambition and curiosity. “I want to be a main reason why American football grows here, there’s lots of room for growth,” he explained. “Europe is beautiful, and the thought of playing abroad, seeing different parts of the world is very intriguing to me.”
Berlin itself also played a key role in his choice. The city and its different facets seem intriguing to the former CFL player. “I chose Berlin because it is a beautiful city and the fans are awesome,” Onyeka added. “I want to bring a championship to this city and give the fans what they deserve.”
Embracing a new league and environment
For a player who has spent his entire career in Canada, adapting to a new football culture will be both a challenge and an opportunity for the football veteran.
“I’m most excited about competing in a new environment and learning how Europeans do things,” Onyeka said. “I’ve been playing football in Canada my whole life and I’m ready to embrace the change in scenery.”
At the same time, he is confident in the organization he is joining. “There are fantastic football organizations in Europe and I know I am in good hands here in Berlin,” he noted.
That combination of openness and confidence could be key as he transitions into the European game.
From adversity to playing American Football in Europe
Onyeka’s journey has not been without setbacks, but those experiences have shaped his mentality as a player. “I have learned that discipline and consistency will take you anywhere you want to get in life and as an athlete,” he said.
He has faced injuries and difficult moments, but views them as defining experiences, as he went on to explain. “I have dealt with multiple major injuries and being cut from teams, but it was how I responded to those tragedies that was more important. Your path in life and as an athlete is never linear, but it is on you to look yourself in the mirror and determine what you really want.”
In his opinion, this mindset also extends to teamwork. “Football is the ultimate team sport where everyone has to have shared focus on the same end goal, which is to ultimately win, that is something I will bring to Berlin Thunder.”
Is Onyeka the missing piece for the Thunder?
On the field, Onyeka describes himself as a smart and versatile defensive back who thrives on preparation. With a lot of players already signed by the Thunder, he could be the missing piece that makes this secondary special. “I am an extremely savvy and technical player. I am a true student of the game and always look for ways to get an upper hand on the opponents,” he said. Those qualities make him a valuable addition to a defense looking to create pressure and generate takeaways.
“I have goals of winning the league championship”
Looking ahead to his first season in Europe, Onyeka is not shy about his ambitions. “This upcoming season will be special,” he said. “I have goals of winning the league championship and being the best defensive player in Europe.”
His message to the fans is just as direct. “The city of Berlin deserves a championship, and I will do everything in my power to deliver that to the fans,” Onyeka promised.
With that mindset, Berlin Thunder are adding not just talent, but a player determined to make a difference, both on the field and in the growth of American football in Europe.
