Paris Lights appoint Darion Simmons as defensive coordinator
The Paris Lights have filled another key position on their coaching staff, appointing 31-year-old American Darion Simmons as defensive coordinator ahead of their debut season in the American Football League Europe. Simmons joins head coach David Shelton and offensive coordinator Timur Beckmann as the third confirmed member of the coaching staff.
Experience at the highest level of European football
Simmons brings direct and relevant experience to the role. He previously worked as assistant defensive coordinator and run game coordinator with the Leipzig Kings before serving as defensive coordinator of the Barcelona Dragons in 2024. His background in building and running defensive systems at the European level makes him a strong fit for what the Lights are trying to build.
A decorated playing career
Before moving into coaching, Simmons had a successful playing career of his own at Division II college McKendree University. He earned a preseason All-American nomination and ranked in the top ten nationally in both sacks and tackles for loss, showing the kind of pass rush instincts and defensive understanding that he now brings to his coaching work.
A talented defensive group already forming
Simmons will have quality to work with from the start. The Paris Lights have already assembled a promising defensive unit featuring Valentin Gnahoua, Randy Abandzounou, Zaire Ugapo and Kenny Floret, giving the new defensive coordinator a solid foundation to build his system around.
With Simmons now in place, the Paris Lights are making steady progress in putting together a complete and competitive roster ahead of the 2026 season.
