Wroclaw Panthers’ Karlis Brauns: “Winning is fun, and it’s a personal promise it will be an exciting season”
Karlis Brauns has been around European football long enough to know the difference between a club and a home. The veteran has worn several jerseys across the continent, but Wroclaw is where he settled. After returning to the Panthers ahead of last season, he is now heading into the AFLE’s inaugural year as one of the most experienced voices in the locker room. Passionate, direct, and with a personality as loud as a pass rush, he has no interest in quiet seasons.
Coming back to the place that feels like home
After years of competing across European football, Brauns has developed a clear sense of what separates a good organisation from a great one. He has experienced both. When he made the decision to return to Wroclaw ahead of last season, it was not by coincidence. The Panthers, he says, are in a category of their own. It is not just the city, though that matters too. It is the way the club is built from the inside.
“Firstly it’s the organisation and the city that truly make me feel at home, but more importantly for anyone from outside, it is the team that functions in practical terms most like a North American football team,” he said.
That comparison to North American football is not a small thing. For players who have grown up watching the NFL and understand what professional preparation looks like, finding a European club that operates with the same standards is rare. In Wroclaw, Brauns found exactly that, and staying was the obvious choice.
A Panthers thug, and proud of it
Ask Brauns to describe himself as a player and he does not reach for polished language. He is someone who brings intensity, physicality, and an edge that opponents feel across the entire game. He knows what he is, and he leans into it.
“On the field I am a thug, but I am a Panthers thug. It is good to have me on your side,” he said.
There is a confidence behind that statement that only comes from experience. Brauns has played against enough teams and enough players to know what he brings to a roster. For the Panthers, having that kind of personality in the locker room, someone who is fully committed and does not shy away from big moments, is exactly the type of player that defines a winning culture.
The people who built him
Behind every player is a story. For Brauns, the most important chapter starts long before any football field. When asked who had the biggest influence on his career, the answer is immediate and unconditional.
“1000% my Mom, no one comes close. But after that it’s my good friend and coach who got me started with all this, and I do love his actual name, Shamanie Peters,” Brauns said.
The combination of a mother who believed in him and a coach who gave him the first push toward the game has carried Brauns through a career that has taken him across multiple countries and leagues. That foundation does not get left behind. It travels with him, and it still shows up every time he steps onto the field.
Old rivalries, familiar faces, and one team to beat
With a career that has touched so many corners of European football, Brauns goes into the AFLE season with a very personal map of the league. There are friends waiting on other sidelines, and there are scores to settle. He does not pretend otherwise.
“The way I play I have friends and enemies in every team. I really want to play against Sullivan again after a long time, many friends there. Vikings is an exciting challenge, I beat them the first time I played them and have lost a few times since, but the universe has to be in balance,” he said.
That last line carries a quiet sharpness. Brauns has lost to the Vikings more than he has won against them. He has not forgotten. The two sides will meet twice in the AFLE this season, with the first matchup already scheduled for week two. He will not have to wait long.
Winning is the goal, and fun is how you get there
When Brauns talks about goals for the season, he does not separate personal ambition from team success. For him, the two are the same thing. The Panthers want to dominate, and he wants to be part of that. His formula for getting there is as direct as everything else about him.
“I aim to have more fun and, as is very well known, winning is fun,” he said.
The team goals sound just as straightforward. Stronger, faster, smarter, and healthy across the whole season. For a group entering their first AFLE campaign, laying those foundations while also competing to win is exactly the right way to approach year one.
And for the fans? Brauns has one message, and he means every word of it.
“I absolutely love every one of you and it’s a personal promise that it will be an exciting season. Bring everyone you know,” he said.
Karlis Brauns is in Wroclaw, and he is there with a point to prove. The Panthers enter the AFLE for the first time with a squad built to compete, and one of its most experienced voices has already made a promise to the city. The season starts 23 May 2026. He will be ready.
